3 Types of Termites to Watch out for in Arizona

August 10, 2018

In Arizona, termites can be household problems thanks to the desert climate that offers them reasonable living conditions. If you live in the area, then it’s important to understand more about the different types of termites so you can better protect your home. The three most common termites and signs they’re in your home include:

1. Drywood Termites

While these aren’t the most common types of termites found in the Phoenix area, they can be a problem in some areas. While it can be difficult to find these because they live inside of wood, identifying signs can be 1 mm holes, piles of small wings, and piles of fecal matter coming out of tiny holes in the wood.

2. Desert Termites

Otherwise known as Wheeler and Gnathamitermes termites, these insects are frequently found in Phoenix. However, they generally only feed on plants and food located outside the home without much risk of coming indoors. One of the biggest signs of these would be mud tubes that cover wood or dead plants outside.

3. Subterranean Termites

When you think of termites, these are what you’re thinking about. Subterranean termites are the most commonly found in Arizona because they flourish in climates such as the dry desert that Phoenix so beautifully provides. They’re most commonly found during Monsoon season, so keep an eye out for these after heavy rains and high winds. To identify them, look for strong yet small mud tubes located around your foundation. These termites tend to live underneath concrete foundations before making their way into the rest of the home.

Warning Signs to Watch Out for

– Mud Tubes: These can be found hanging from the ceiling or seemingly attached to the foundation or walls. These are surefire signs of an infestation.

– Damaged Wood: While wood can naturally become damaged due to wear and tear, visible termite damage will leave the appearance of small mazes and tunnels.

– Small Pinholes in Drywall: These tiny little holes allow termites to get into the wall and travel throughout your home.
